Witch Works!

DiRoccoVision • 2026 • Homebrew • Family / Board Game

Four rooms. Three witches. One way out.

Homebrew

The haunted house has trapped you inside, and three meddling witches stand between you and freedom. Roll the die, slide your token through the Broom Room, the Witchin' Kitchen, the Spell Cell, and the Bat's Ballroom, and race for the Charmed Circle before your rivals beat you to the door. But beware the witches: Glenda the Good, Wicked Wanda, and Ghoulish Gertie each have their own way of turning your night upside down.

Witch Works! brings a beloved style of haunted-house race game roaring onto the ColecoVision and ADAM. Draw Wanda and you're turned into a mouse — frozen until kindly Glenda breaks the spell. Draw Gertie and the whammy ball comes rattling down the chimney, slamming into a random room and bouncing every token caught on a Danger square all the way back to the start. Each of the four rooms hides its own trap: a swinging broom, a wobbly kitchen floor, a sliding wall panel, and a slippery ballroom staircase.

Play solo against up to three cackling CPU opponents, or gather the family for four-player hot-seat chaos. Featuring hand-drawn witch sprites that animate across a haunted backdrop, an eerie organ soundtrack, a witch cackle for every whammy drop, optional Speed Mode for shorter games, and a hidden Ghost character for players who dare to find it. Can you escape the house before the witches have their way?

BEHIND THE SCENES

Witch Works! is DiRoccoVision's original take on the classic haunted-house "race and react" board game format — the kind of family game where a chimney-dropped whammy ball and a deck of spell cards decide your fate. The three-witch premise (a good witch, a bad witch, and a chaos-bringer) and the four themed rooms are reimagined as an 8-bit arcade experience.

The design maps cleanly to the ColecoVision's TMS9918A video chip and SN76489 sound chip: 8x8 sprite tokens snake along tile paths, the whammy ball animates through a central chimney panel, and the PSG handles the eerie organ ambiance, the witch cackles, and the triumphant fanfare when a mouse-spell is finally lifted.

Built as a modest 32KB ROM, Witch Works! leaves room for an animated title screen where the three witches drift across the haunted backdrop while the classic rhyme scrolls beneath them. It is designed to support the standard joystick or the Driving Module spinner as a "spin the witch wheel" mechanic for an extra arcade feel.
